A Study in Yellow
Haldi Ceremony at Sea, Newport Beach, CA – 2017

The Challenge
Design a fully realized Haldi/Sangeet ceremony – traditionally built around turmeric, and therefore inherently messy – aboard a dinner cruise ship, for roughly 180 guests, under real maritime restrictions. The one creative brief from the family: make it all yellow.
The Approach
Meeting the ship's rules before designing anything else. Every item brought aboard required advance approval from both the captain and the port authority, candles were prohibited outright, and the full inventory had to be submitted upfront against a hard weight limit. Every design decision had to work backward from what the ship would actually allow.

Committing to yellow, without losing nuance. All yellow, as requested, balanced with small touches of coral and orange so the space read as festive rather than one-note. I hand-painted the lanterns and frames used across the Bindi & Bangle Bar, the henna station, and the dinner centerpieces, so every element on the ship shared one visual language.

Turning open deck into ceremony space. Turmeric and the ship's white furniture don't mix, so I layered fabrics and saris across the space – protecting the furniture while transforming the same open deck into something that felt significant enough for a blessing ceremony. Hours later, the same space became the night's dance floor.

A ceremony space built entirely within a working ship's real operational rules – approved item by item, weighed and accounted for – that still delivered exactly what the family asked for: a cohesive, festive, unmistakably yellow celebration for 180 guests.
